EBCDIC (Extended Binary Coded Decimal Information Code) is a rare 8 bit encoding used in IBM machines and operating systems. It’s still in use with some legacy applications and databases.
Despite being 8 bits, there are only 95 characters in EBCDIC. The characters are english letters, numbers, and symbols. Unlike other encodings, EBCDIC letters and symbols are not neatly ordered, and it doesn’t contain as many symbols.
